" Yard of Week" contest begins Memorial Day weekend and runs to Labor Day with a winner selected each week. Edmond Beautiful Inc., the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, The Edmond Sun and the Home Depot co-sponsor the "Yard of the Week". The contest is designed to encourage residents to make their yards more attractive, and to recognize a few of those who do. Residents may nominate their own yard or those of others within the city limits of Edmond, not the Edmond School District which is different. A yard can win only once a year, but nominated yards remain in consideration all summer.
Each week, a member of Edmond Beautiful Inc., judges nominated yards on Sunday evening and Monday morning when most yards look their best after the weekends work. Nominated yards are judged on the basis of landscaping design, overall neatness and appearance, use of color and effort required. Only yards visible from city streets are eligible. Equal consideration is given to all nominated yards, whether professionally landscaped and maintained, rural estate or attractively designed and well-kept small yards in older neighborhoods.
A special new classically designed "Edmond Yard of the Week" sign designed by Vital Signs with the new Edmond Beautiful Inc., logo on it is placed in the winning yard. A photograph of the award recipients and prize-winning yard is featured in the Edmond Sun's Home & Garden page on Friday. The winners also receive a free six-month subscription to the Edmond Sun. In addition, they will receive a $50 store credit from the Home Depot and Mayor Dan O'Neil will send a letter of appreciation to each recipient.
So keep a sharp lookout for the most beautiful and well-kept yards. Then with everyone having cell phone take a moment out of your busy schedule and call the Edmond Chamber of Commerce at 341-2808 or contact us by email to nominate a deserving yard. Each nomination should include street address, housing addition and nominated resident's name and telephone number if known. Let's give recognition to those that truly make Edmond Beautiful.
Sometimes the most beautiful yards go un rewarded because no one took a moment to nominate. Let's all make this program a big success and recognize those residents that make Edmond Beautiful.
